Licensing

Peddler's License

The City of Houghton requires all "peddlers" to be licensed before selling either door-to-door or in a fixed location for a temporary period of time.  In order to receive a "Peddler's License" you must fill out the attached form and submit it to the City Clerk along with the application fee of $5 per day, or $50 per year.  The Clerk and Police Chief must approve the license.  If you have questions you can contact the City Clerk at 482-1700.

Precious Metal & Gem Dealer

In accordance with Public Act 95 of 1981 all dealers buying and selling precious metals and gems must obtain a valid certificate of registration from the local government and police department prior to conducting business.

Interested dealers must submit the attached Application along with the $50 application fee to the City Clerk along with a completed Employee Registration for every employee that will be working in the City of Houghton.  You must receive a Certificate of Registration prior to buying and selling any precious metals and gems.  The Certificate of Registration is good for one year after issuance.   If you have any questions, you can contact the City Clerk at 482-1700.

Taxi Cab Licensing

Requirements and Procedure for obtaining a Taxicab License (Section 94-56):
 
An applicant must obtain the following items and submit them to the City of Houghton Police Department for a Taxicab License:

  • A completed Taxicab Vehicle License Application Form (see below).

  • A valid proof of insurance form provided by your insurance carrier meeting the minimum limits outlined in Appendix A of this code.

  • A copy of the State of Michigan vehicle registration.

  • A copy of the proof of insurance carried inside the vehicle.

  • A completed vehicle inspection form signed by a licensed, certified mechanic including a copy of the mechanic’s valid license.

  • A certified copy of your criminal history record obtained through the Michigan State Police Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT).  No other source will be accepted.

  • A copy of your complete or edited driving record by the Michigan Department of State Record Lookup Unit.  The request can be made by mail, fax, telephone, or in person at a Secretary of State Branch office.

Once submitted, the police department will inform you of the status of the application.
 
If approved, you will need to:

  • Bring the approval and $15 permit fee to the City Clerk for issuance of the license.


Requirements and Procedure for obtaining a Taxicab Driver Permit (Section 94-86 and 94-87):
 
An applicant must obtain the following items and submit them to the City of Houghton Police Department for a Taxicab Driver Permit:

  • A valid operator license with chauffeur’s endorsement with your current address.

  • A taxicab driver permit application form (see below)

  • A certified copy of your criminal history record obtained through the Michigan State Police Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT).  No other source will be accepted.

  • A copy of your complete or edited driving record by the Michigan Department of State Record Lookup Unit.  The request can be made by mail, fax, telephone, or in person at a Secretary of State Branch office.

  • Two recent identical passport style, quality and size photographs (with head and shoulder view) approximately 2 inches by 2 inches.  If eyeglasses are worn, they should be shown in the photographs.

  • Physical exam by a licensed physician as required by Section 94-87.

The applicant will be contacted when the taxicab driver permit is processed and available for pick-up.
