Free Smoke Detector Installations  

The Houghton Fire Department is participating in a State funded grant program that allows the department to install free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors into the homes of residents within the city.

The targeted customers of these detectors will be homes with children, elderly residents, and residents living in poverty. The State of Michigan compiled data of fire deaths, and found that a majority of fire-related deaths were from homes with children, elderly, and those living in poverty.

If you would like to take part in this program, please call the Houghton City Office and ask to be placed on the list for installation. You will need to provide your name, address and contact information so that the fire department can contact you and schedule installation. All installations must be complete by August 1, 2019. As part of the grant, the department is required to issue a free assessment of potential fire hazards in the home in hopes of preventing future fire deaths.
